Things to do
University Heights is central to some of the best parts of San Diego like Hillcrest, North Park, Normal Heights and the like. But, the beauty of living here is that you don’t even need to leave. It has its own downtown area with plenty of places to grab a cocktail with friends. It also has the Diversionary Theater, which is the oldest LGBT theater in the country! You can catch comedy at shows at Lestat’s, get drinks at Lancer’s, and enjoy vegan/vegetarian meals at Grains, Plumeria, Red House, El Zarape, and tons of other places in the community. It is also within walking distance to Hillcrest but just far enough away if you like to get away from the noise of one of the most popular areas of San Diego.
Walkability
Stop by University Heights and you will see many people love walking around this area. You can walk on the west end of the neighborhood to catch beautiful canyon and ocean views or walk down Park to enjoy the Hillcrest Farmer’s Market. This neighborhood is similar to North Park and Normal Heights in that, from here, you can walk to it all! And you should try it on one of those days where the San Diego weather is too good to not enjoy.

University Heights is close to the 8 and 163. This makes it a great area to live in if you need to zip on that interstate and head to North County for work, or if you frequent Coronado for endless queso at Miguel’s Cocina. (Okay, maybe that’s just us.) Like some of the other neighborhoods nearby, University Heights’ proximity to—well—everything, might make it so that you don’t even need to sit in traffic on those freeways at all. You may find that you want to lace up your tennies and walk around or use the markets nearby for shopping.
